INTRODUCTION TO ADVERTISING

  1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the  connotations  or deeper meanings of each convention?  For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.  -Pictures of product (skittles) reminds us what type of product it is. The image tells us that the contents of the product contains original fruits. -The Textiles of the Logo is in big white block letters, contrasting with the background. There is a rainbow coming out of the space between the I and k, with the skittles product at the end of the rainbow. The skittles at the end of the rainbow could connote to the saying "There is always treasure at the end of the rainbow." -The background of the advert consists of a rainbow made by the Skittles sweets and clouds in a blue sky behind it.   GENDER STEREOTYPES IN ADVERTISING   1) Find  three  adverts featuring women that are from the 1950s or 1960s.  Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post.  Hint:  You may wish to look at car, perfume or cleaning products but can use any product you wish. 2) Find  three  adverts featuring women that are from post-2000.     3) What stereotypes of women can you find in the 1950s and 1960s adverts? Give specific examples.  The second advert shows a man standing with only his torso showing and a women kneeling at his feet, his hand wrapped around her face. The word "Tames" is used suggesting that the women needs to be tamed in corrolation to the jeans that were being talked about in the advert.
